Our Petition

Wales Seniors Forum have now launched our petition to the Welsh Government, asking them to provide funding and support for the adequate provision of accessible and clean public toilets.

We are hoping to reach the 10,000 threshold so that Members of the Senedd will debate our petition. To achieve this we urgently need you to sign and share this petition!

Our initial research

Our survey has now concluded. A total of 158 people responded to our survey from 19 local authority areas, the majority from Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cardiff, Anglesey and Ceredigion. The age range of respondents was from 50 to 91.

87% said that if the public toilets that they use regularly were not available, it would have an impact on their lifestyles. This is an increase of 7% compared to the 2012 survey.

  • 59% said it would mean they wouldn’t go out or would limit how long they spent away from their home
  • 11% said that without a toilet, they would have an accident in public
  • 11% said that the absence of the toilets would cause panic, desperation or distress
  • Some said that they would drink less when out of the house

Clearly, the absence or closure of public toilets is a significant barrier to participation in society for many people. Our results have encouraged us to continue with our campaign.

Our ongoing campaign

  • In January 2024 we wrote to Eluned Morgan MS, Minister for Health and Social Care, and she informed us that she will write to Officials in Local Authorities to remind them to update their entries on the public toilet map, which you can find here.
  • We were really proud to see our Chair, Gareth Parsons, on ITV News speaking about the plan to close public toilets in Denbeighshire. Watch Gareth speak here. Gareth said, "Older people would be worried about going into a town if there isn't a toilet - certainly in an unfamiliar area."
